Project overview
The Bermuda Institute of Ocean Sciences wanted to give middle-school students across Bermuda a more engaging way to understand how climate change was already affecting their island, oceans and future careers.
With support from HSBC Bermuda, we partnered with the BIOS education team to develop The Climate Classroom — a gamified learning experience that transformed the research campus into a series of collaborative missions, experiments and immersive encounters. More than 200 students participated in the first edition in 2023.
Rather than separating science, technology and play, the experience brought them together — using puzzles, climate data, VR, AR and hands-on experimentation to make complex subjects something students could actively discover.

The Climate Quest
Working alongside the BIOS education team and community partner Planet Math, we designed an escape-room-style climate quest around five interactive stations.
Students moved across the campus in teams, unlocking boxes, interpreting scientific data, decoding invisible-ink clues and solving challenges connected to hurricanes, greenhouse gases, coral bleaching, ocean acidification and rising ocean temperatures.
The goal wasn’t simply to deliver information but to make students curious enough to discover it for themselves.

Science meets
emerging media
Technology became another way into the science.
Students stepped into VR experiences to train like marine biologists — tagging manta rays, monitoring ocean health and observing changes in reef biodiversity.
They also learned photogrammetry, scanning real coral specimens to create 3D objects before bringing them into AR and platforms such as Roblox Studio and Emblematic Group’s Reach.
Tarik Mohamed led the photogrammetry and AR sessions, introducing students to the process of turning real coral specimens into digital assets and virtual environments.
Participants were introduced to possible pathways across marine biology, environmental engineering, technology, entrepreneurship and emerging media — connecting what they were learning in school with careers they may not previously have considered.

Outcome
Learning by doing.
More than 200 students participated in the first Climate Classroom, exploring climate science through collaborative challenges, VR, AR and hands-on experimentation.
Alongside the experience itself, we supported the programme’s launch through communications, press materials and the capture of photo and video content for social channels — helping BIOS introduce the initiative, build awareness and share the experience beyond the students taking part.
What began as a new educational programme went on to have a life beyond its first edition. BIOS continued developing Climate Classroom in subsequent years, expanding on the foundation established during the original launch.
The result was more than a one-off experience: it helped get a new climate-learning programme off the ground and gave BIOS a format it could continue to grow.
